I Didn’t Miss Malls Until Billie Eilish’s New Music Video
Written by Peter Nicieja on November 13, 2020
At just 18 years old, Billie Eilish already cemented herself as one of the most successful streaming artists of all time. She’s influenced a new generation of musicians, and in her latest music video, she influenced me too… to go to the mall.
Eilish directed her own video to her newest song, “Therefore I Am,” and in it she makes her way through an empty mall collecting all the free pretzels and fries, AKA everyone’s dream.
This is easily the most Billie Eilish thing I’ve ever seen. She’s always been an artist that is unapologetically herself and this video showcases her playful personality. It’s refreshing to see, especially with most artists taking themselves way too seriously in their videos.
The lower production quality is another aspect that I appreciated. No dramatic lighting, camera angles, or back-up dancers make the whole thing feel so raw. What’s more is that the video makes it seem like it’s one continuous shot. Of course, it’s edited to hide several cuts quite nicely, but the long-take makes the audience feel as if they’re there with her.
And let’s face it, who wouldn’t want an empty mall to themselves right now?
I only have one complaint… SHE DIDN’T EVEN EAT THE PRETZEL!
