TikTok is Helping Me Keep My Teeth Clean
Written by Peter Nicieja on October 13, 2020
Disclaimer: I brushed my teeth this morning and flossed last night. On a scale of 1-10, I’d say my dental hygiene is at a 7, with plenty of room for improvement.
Now that I got that out of the way, I feel better admitting that I haven’t visited the dentist once this year… something that I usually do every 6 months. I have a feeling that I’m not the only one who has forgotten, after all, there’s been a lot on our minds lately and I think teeth haven’t been prioritized much.
Fortunately, we have TikTok.
What does that have to do with teeth and going to the dentist? Well, as it turns out, a decent amount.
I came across a “Tik Toker” named Dr. Gao, who is a dentist from Malaysia, and all of his video have to do with dental hygiene. Through his short TikToks, I’ve learned that I use way too much toothpaste (causes dental fluorosis), that I brush way to hard (makes your teeth yellow), and that I should spit instead of wash my mouth out with water (the toothpaste takes some time to work). These are all things I never learned from my dentist, and I could implement them tonight!
Does TikTok take away the need for me to go to the dentist? No, but at the very least I can apply the tips I’ve learned through it to get my dental hygiene up to a solid 9 while I procrastinate scheduling a dentist appointment.
Guess this app has more “bite” than I first thought.
